About us:

Interest in the Christian Science movement in this area began with a spiritual healing in 1890. Afterwards, a study group was formed and church services were held in private homes. In 1891, due to increased attendance, a hall was rented for services and Sunday School. In 1892, the group organized as First Church of Christ, Scientist, London, Ontario and became a recognized branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. For the next few years, church services and Sunday School continued in rented halls in the downtown area, and a Reading Room (originally called a “Dispensary”) was available at the same locations.

In 1899, application was made to the Ontario Legislature for a Charter, and this was granted. This made it the first chartered Church of Christ, Scientist in the British Commonwealth. In the same year, St. James Presbyterian Church -- commonly called the “Pepper Box Church” -- was purchased. (This Church had its prototype in one of Sir Christopher Wren’s churches in Edinburgh, Scotland.) The property was located at Richmond, Kent and Clarence Streets. When the debt on church and property was fully paid, the Church was dedicated in 1907. A Reading Room continued to be maintained, and many outstanding healings resulted in much progress.

In 1960, an option was taken on 89 Ridout Street South, and the property was subsequently purchased. In December of that year, the Richmond Street property was sold and the premises vacated the following month. Plans for a new church building were approved, and construction began in June 1961. During the period of construction, services and Sunday School were held in a rented school.

The first services in the new church were held on Communion Sunday, January 14, 1962. A Rededication Committee was formed and members’ metaphysical meetings were held regularly. Four years later, on January 30, 1966, with all indebtedness cleared, Rededication Services were held.

In December 1979, the Reading Room was moved from 334 Dundas Street, at Waterloo, to 442 Clarence Street, between Dundas and Queens Avenue, and on September 1998 it moved to 354 Wellington Street, between King and York Streets where it still operates.

In 2013, the church building was sold and church services began to be held at the Best Western Lamplighter Inn in south London.
