More about Pit Stop For Change Rescue & Rehabilitation

Pit Stop for Change Rescue and Rehabilitation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, no-kill shelter and volunteer pet rescue organization serving the Detroit, Michigan area. We are dedicated to rescuing, caring for, and rehabilitating dogs left homeless for any reason, such as pet overpopulation, pets given up by their owners because of difficult circumstances, and those who are victims of or in danger of abuse or neglect. These are wonderful, loving animals that often only need love, compassion and training to make them an incredibly awesome family member and best friend.

We place pets in loving, responsible, permanent homes following a comprehensive adoption process which includes taking considerable care in finding good matches and educating prospective adopters about the responsibilities and costs of bringing a dog into their homes and lives. For each potential adoption we make a home visit to ensure that the home is prepared and safe for our dog.

Animals in our care are spayed or neutered and receive all appropriate veterinary care and treatment. We assist dogs in distress without regard to age, breed or ease of placement. Each dog we rescue requires many hours of care and social rehabilitation. No matter what it takes, we don’t give up. We believe that each one wants to trust again and can become a well-behaved and socialized canine citizen. We take our time. We pride ourselves in our ability to rehabilitate unwanted and neglected dogs and to pair them up with the right home.

We strive to work with other area shelters and other rescue and humane organizations to develop a network of supporters and volunteers in order to create a better world for homeless pets. We also spend time, when we can, doing humane education for children. Learning about compassion and empathy early in life builds moral character and reduces violence. It instills in children a sense of empowerment and responsibility, making them less likely to be excessively aggressive.

We are determined to keep administrative expenses extremely low so that every dollar taken in goes directly to the animals in our care. We are 100% volunteer-based and the directors of our organization are unpaid.

The need to help dogs in our area has outgrown our shelter so we are in the process of raising money to move to a better facility. A new shelter will allow us to help more dogs, allow for more volunteer involvement, and give us room to increase our rehabilitation and education services
