More about South Grey Bruce Youth Literacy Council

We help kids read.

The South Grey Bruce Youth Literacy Council is a charitable non-profit organization, operating since 1989. We work with children and youth 6-18 and their families, to help build literacy skills.

The Youth Literacy Council provides free confidential one-to-one tutoring for youth and children, aged 6 to 18, who are struggling with reading, writing and math. It is proven that help received early can bring the young person up to their grade level, while boosting confidence and self-esteem. The success of this established program is both heartening and remarkable. We have helped hundreds of young learners in the diverse rural communities throughout South Grey Bruce Area, working in partnership with the public libraries, youth oriented arts groups and community service organizations to support and assist family literacy. We provide learning resources for community use and are able to provide family literacy advocacy for parents.

Volunteer tutors are carefully screened and trained and matched one-to-one with youth who are struggling with their learning. This is a free, confidential service and individualized programming is monitored for each tutor/learner match. The commitment to tutor is taken up by people from many walks of life and for many fulfilling reasons. High school students also come forward. The volunteers participate in a most gratifying experience while gaining excellent marketable skills and strengthen personal resumes. The successful young learners come up to grade level with boosted self-esteem.

The SGB Youth Literacy Council has forged an exceptional relationship with the four regional library systems to utilize their locations as safe and effective tutoring locations for the tutors and learners to meet together. Professional offices and local schools also provide positive learning environments.

The SGB Youth Literacy Council has also been active in identifying trends and opportunities for other literacy learning alternatives that accommodate a variety of learning styles.
