What is a diabetes alert dog or DAD?
A trained diabetes alert dog can detect changes in their handler’s blood sugar levels to avoid an impending hypoglycemic episode that they may not be aware of through their keen sense of smell and alert their handler through a series of tasks to avoid the episode that may cause coma or even death. This can happen as much as thirty minutes before a glucometer can detect the change.
To date we have trained and placed three dogs with three children with diabetes. You can meet these children under the “Meet the Kids/Meet the Dogs” link on our website.
Families of children with diabetes bear 50% of the cost of training their dog. The remaining cost is borne by Sweet Charity. That’s why your participation matters so much. Each trained Diabetes Alert Dog is valued at $10,000.
