Vancouver, BC — Axé Capoeira Vancouver will be hosting their sixth annual Afro-Brazilian Carnaval on Saturday, July 30, 2016, along Granville Street between W.Georgia and Smithe. Thousands of people are expected for a full day of performances including a samba parade with a live percussion band, a traditional Afro-Brazilian royal procession dance (Maracatu), blood-pumping Brazilian music, and of course gravity-defying capoeira presentations! Featuring world-class capoeiristas, musicians, and dancers from around the world, Axé Capoeira will put on an unforgettable event as one of the highlights of VIVA Vancouver’s Granville Social—a weekend festival showcasing local and international artists, musicians, athletes, and more.

Event: Afro-Brazilian Carnaval 2016
Date: July 30, 2016
Time: 11 am to 5 pm
Location: Granville Street between West Georgia and Smithe

Capoeira is a one of a kind martial art that combines aspects of self-defense, acrobatics, music and dance. Uniquely Afro-Brazilian in its origins, it combines these various art forms into one synergistic martial art training experience.

Originating in Recife, Brazil, Axé Capoeira Vancouver is Canada’s first academy of Capoeira. Backed by worldwide releases of eleven albums of capoeira music on CD, several VHS and DVD performance videos, and a four-volume capoeira instructional DVD compilation, Axé Capoeira continues to grow and promote its art with over 10,000 students across the globe.

The contagious culture of Brazil will take over Granville Street as spectators experience traditional Brazilian music and dances, colorful costumes, and the exciting athleticism and acrobatics that Vancouverites have come to expect from Axé Capoeira. This is where some of the best capoeira practitioners from around the world will showcase their talents. Spectators will be invited to dance and participate during the day and be wowed as the event culminates with an amazing final performance and Brazilian celebration.
