Anita Hummer

I was born and raised in Elizabeth City in what is now the Second Ward. I love downtown Elizabeth City, where I worked just out of high school, in the Carolina and Kramer buildings, before moving to Virginia for a few years.

I worked for the Federal Government for most of my life. I retired from the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA, where I worked for the Chairman of the Orthopedic Department as a Medical Administrative Assistant/Secretary. Prior to that, I worked as the Administrative Assistant/Secretary to the Commanding Officer of the Norfolk Naval Station. I was also employed at National Institute of Health, Bethesda, MD as a Medical Transcriptionist, and at Harry Diamond Laboratory in Woodbridge, VA. I worked at the U.S. Air Force Systems Command, and the Malcolm Grow USAF Medical Center at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C.

My husband retired from the U.S. Marine Corps., with tours in Korea and Vietnam with First Force Recon. After he retired, he moved me “back home”. I now live a few blocks from where I was born.

We have three sons. We also have a daughter who died in November of pancreatic cancer, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. My husband had a daughter who is also buried there. We have five grandchildren. One grandson was killed in a head-on collision a few years ago.

My husband and I love working in our yard, where we have many beautiful flowers. I love to create oil paintings of movie stars and animals. I also collect Angel figurines, dolls and old photographs.

I love animals, especially dogs. I have a Dachshund named Lucky, and he is very lucky to live with us. I am especially fond of children and the elderly.

And I obviously love representing the Second Ward and serving the citizens of Elizabeth City on City Council!
