Big Black Dog Farm

We have lived on an old Dairy Farm just north of Kingston, Ontario for the past 17 years; we love our property. As the pressures of urban expansion began to push out from the city, we started to pay attention and realised the potential of this beautiful property.

Two seasons ago we started our very first vegetable garden, loved it and really thought about our philosophical beliefs and what is important to us as we are approaching a “certain age”. We believe in the stewardship of the land, from encouraging the struggling bee population to observing the other wild animals that are feeling the urban pressure along with us. We knew we wanted to become more sustainable and self reliant in the way we live. We believe other people do too and so co-operative sharing is how we have started, two families (13 people) plus friends benefited last year, this year we are “hosting a hive” with a local bee keeping club, getting our own chickens and learning all we can from wonderful local farmers, gardeners and permacultures experts

The best thing about our adventure is the wonderful people we have met along the way. We believe that sharing skills, knowledge and cross promoting all that everyone can bring to the table allows for real sustainability – individually, as a community and for future generations.

Our goal is to build Big Black Dog Farm into a place where people want to join us to share in a community garden, come for a visit and then stay for a night or two to enjoy the area. When they leave, take home a little something to remind them of real country life and values. This is our adventure and we want to share it with you… in person or virtually.
