More about Common Roots Urban Farm

Common Roots Urban Farm was granted space last year on the corner of Bell Rd. and Robie St., where Queen Elizabeth High School used to be located. This is an interim land use through Partners for Care, a registered charity that supports the patients of Capital Health.

Common Roots Urban Farm is a hybrid garden. More than just a community garden, the farm includes a market garden, community plots, spots to sit and relax, and the beginning of a food forest. This is a pilot project hoping to inspire a community-built vision of an incubator farm in every district.

In 2013, we plan to develop a flower farm and food bank CSA. We also hope to have more access to shade and pathways and are working with Kinsmen towards making our space more accessible so that we can reach and serve citizens of all backgrounds and abilities. As an added bonus, we hope to develop a children’s garden with school and container demonstration.

Our goal is to contribute to a Nova Scotia that is able to boast socially and ecologically productive landscapes. We plan to achieve this through increasing our food production and our ability to prepare healthy food. By granting citizens access to restorative landscapes such as CRUF, we hope to further promote health and wellness within HRM.

CRUF has quickly become known as a unique and productive green space where all of our citizens are welcome. Members of the community can participate and contribute to the garden on a casual or dedicated basis, and we are committed to the benefits we can provide for under-serviced areas within HRM. We welcome all to come and share their knowledge, ideas and opinions.
