Imagine this scenario: there is a person who will be unable to eat without assistance, unable to wash their face and unable to transfer from a chair to their own bed without a great deal of help. You know that in the future, this person will be you, a person suffering from Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS) causing nerve degeneration. ALS will not affect your mind, but burdens you with the inability to use your voluntary muscles. You are completely aware that you are unable to care for yourself, and you know that there is nothing you can do because ALS will kill you. This was the scenario facing Esther.
Many of us would have given up but not Esther, she made the decision to continue her life as before her diagnosis - as an activist.
