More about Folklorni Ansambl Šumadija

The initial activities on organizing folk dancing group in east GTA and Durham Region started in September 1992, thanks to the efforts of Ms. Ranka Matejić and some other parents from Oshawa and surrounding areas.

The beginning was difficult since many children did not speak Serbian language and the choreographer himself was not fluent in English. After a few practices held in Greek church, the group “United Serbs” moved to Waverly PS in Oshawa. Since 1993 the folk dance group has practiced regularly in St.Arsenije Sremac Church in Whitby. As the group grew larger, its name c changed to “Sumadija” in 1994.

In 1995 there were about 40 children attending Friday practices regularly. Those young people supported by their parents Attended many concerts throughout Ontario, Quebec and the United States of America.

Thanks to the continuous enthusiasm and dedication of the choreographer Sanja Lukic and parents, the folk dance group Sumadija keeps experiencing success, becoming one of the most distinguished groups of that kind in Serbian community Canada.
