During the War of 1812, Fort George served as the headquarters for the Centre Division of the British Army. Fort George was a principal fortification on the Niagara Peninsula during the War of 1812 and played a key role in the defence of Upper Canada. On May 25, 1813, Fort George was destroyed by American artillery, which, contributed to an American victory in the Battle of Fort George and a subsequent seven-month occupation by American forces.
