Gordon Halkett Real Estate

Gordon Halkett was born and raised in Nanaimo. His initial career idea was to be a shop teacher, but instead he took a British Leyland mechanic apprenticeship. In his spare time, he began buying cheap houses and renting them out. His first property was $6,300 in 1975.

He only earned $ 2.50/ hour and never thought he'd pay for the place. The Realtor he worked with suggested he take the real estate course. This he did, never thinking it would be his life's work.

Gord wanted to build and race cars. One winter he was lying under an MGB, with water dripping onto his my face and frozen hands and he thought: “I will do something else in life!”
Real Estate. Two out 12 people passed the pre-licensing course then, and suddenly he had a real estate license and a "bull pen" cubical at Block Bros Realty.

He had a red 1966 GMC pickup truck and no money for marketing, but off he went.
He did very well, working 16 hours days to get money for clothes and a 4-door car.

In 1980 he was asked to join a new real estate company, Bowen Realty, with brand new offices and a personal assistant. They built this up from 6 partners to over 30 salespeople in 3 years, and eventually moved to Woodgrove and bought the Re/Max franchise.

Gord sold out and went independent for 12 years, and eventually realised that the major brokerages –Century 21, Re/Max and Royal Lepage were gaining more market share because they can advertise more and small brokerages could not compete in the internet age. He joined Century 21 - It was the only way to go.

Over the 40 years, Gord has been involved in over 4,000 local residential transactions, and still finds it a thrill to do business. He’s owned and managed 3 brokerages, a condo specialist company, a property management company, construction company and many rental properties.

Sometimes people ask, "Why don't you retire?"
"And do what??" he asks. There is nothing more interesting for him than working (playing) in real estate. He still love cars, and racing,but he’s not going back to lying under an MGB.
