Helios Wire is building a disruptive, space-enabled Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) platform — a global, vertically integrated system for superior monitoring, messaging, and broadcast services. With up to 5 billion transmitters worldwide, this full-scale service is being designed to track and provide communication for as low as $1 per month.
Helios is set to become the world’s first satellite and terrestrial based global M2M service, specifically designed for low-cost applications without significant latency requirements. The system will focus on monitoring, tracking and data collection from open- environment assets, globally. This Helios system is designed to be scalable and integrated, and will leverage both existing and available infrastructure. It will consist of 30 low-cost satellites, which will be launched beginning in 2018, continuing through to 2022.
Transmitters — some as small as credit cards — will send information like location, elevation, temperature, proximity, density, and movement to those satellites, which will then downlink the data to existing ground stations, where it is stored in a cloud-based system and delivered to customers. Transmitters can also connect to external sensors; a useful capability in industries like agriculture, mining, environmental monitoring, logistics, and more.
In early 2018, two first-generation satellites will be launched to anchor the system and provide services for industries that don’t have demanding latency requirements.
