Alberta is known worldwide as a producer of conventional and synthetic crude oil, natural gas and gas products. The Athabasca oil sands surrounding Fort McMurray contains one of largest oil reserves in the world. In recent years, Alberta’s economy has become increasingly diverse with natural resources (oil, gas and mining) now accounting for only 22% of Alberta’s GDP. Alberta’s proximity to the western United States, a market of 66 million people, means the sectors such as Transportation, Manufacturing and Food & Beverage are projected to grow significantly. Saskatchewan, in the heart of Canada’s prairies, is best known for agriculture, particularly wheat, although Saskatchewan also boasts a very diverse economy. The province has a strong mining sector and is the world’s leader in potash and uranium production. Additionally, Saskatchewan’s oil and gas sector is second only to Alberta in production in Canada. Transportation, service, and manufacturing sectors are also significant contributors to the province’s growth and GDP.
