The Kahnawake Education Center was established by the Kahnawake Combined Schools Committee (KCSC) in 1980 to administer all education programs on its behalf; administrative control of educational programs was assumed from the Department of Indian Affairs over the period of 1983 to 1988. It directly operated three community schools; Karonhianonhnha School, Kateri School and the Kahnawake Survival School, as well as provides services and tuition for students attending many elementary, secondary and post-secondary institutions outside of Kahnawake.
