Hanshi Darrell LaFrance (9th Dan) has been studying martial arts since the age of three. He has studied various types of martial arts including traditional Japanese Jiu Jitsu, Shotokan Karate, Kuk Sool Won, and Drunken Kung Fu. Hanshi LaFrance has Native American heritage and has also studied the fighting styles of his ancestors.
It is common practice in many Asian and Native American cultures to model their fighting style after animals. Kumo Jiu Jitsu is an eclectic martial art that is modelled after the fighting style of the spider (Kumo means spider in Japanese). By taking the timing, agression, and overwhelming power of a tarantula and the patience, cunning, and tactics of common web-weaving spiders, as well as combining different fighting techniques, principles, and theories from several other martial art styles, Hanshi Darrell LaFrance has developed a very unique and highly effective method of self-defense. Keeping true to the traditions of the past, but still recognizing the new dangers of today, Kumo Jiu Jitsu prepares an individual to defend themself in virtually any situation. Kumo Jiu Jitsu will teach you to use the various parts of your body for striking (punches, kicks, knees, elbows, etc), joint locking techniques that attack the weaker points of your opponent's body, the use of pressure points, clinching, throwing, off-balancing techniques to take your opponent to the ground, and grappling techniques to control and subdue your opponent from any further threat.
Over all, Kumo Jiu Jitsu is a very well-rounded self-defense fighting style that is adaptable and effective in any situation.
