ABOUT ME
I have been a professional photographer and instructor in the Saint John area since 2004. I am a graduate of the Alberta College of Art and Design where I attained a 4 year BFA with a major in Photography. Over the last 12 years I have had my own studio where I shot commercial, portraiture and wedding jobs. I also taught classes and tours. At present I have a 8 year old daughter Emma and a 11 year old son Ben. For the past 6 years I have focused my attention on raising the two most important people in my world, while supporting the hardest working wife and mother I know from home. We decided together to shut down my studio, focus on teaching and fine art exploration while also being a full-time stay at home dad. The details of why aren't important. What is important is that now we are in a good place as a family for me to devote more time to my teaching and my own artistic endeavors.

I have spent every summer and Fall since 2004 teaching and tutoring photography to cruise ship guests on photo tours / workshops around our region. It is one of my favorite things to do, as I can make a real difference in literally thousands of photographers' lives in a few short hours. I have also held group workshops and week long intensive classes as well as eight week courses. One thing I have noticed as digital photography has grown is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to provide group classes where everyone in the group is getting what they need. The vast difference in computer literacy, combined with the insane number of new cameras and new functions, not to mention the heaps of photo-editing software and platforms, is making group teaching harder and in my opinion much less effective for the students. My passion for teaching and care for my students means my stress level, frustration, and workload were going through the roof trying to make sure that each of my students was receiving what they each needed and wanted from me. It is true however, that by far, the best way to make money at teaching is in a group format. But what if money wasn't your main motivation? My motivation is for each student to get what they need from me, based on their interests, equipment and level of knowledge.

So this is what I have decided to do. I know I will make a lot less money than I could, but I also know that each student I work with will get exactly what they need from me. This format allows me to work with you and your equipment (including your computer) at your level. I also believe that tutoring allows me to condense what you learn, so you will learn it faster as I will teach to you in the way that you learn best. I believe you can learn ten times as much in an hour of one-on-one than you can in a large group.

So, my service has become custom photography tutoring lessons to individuals or small groups of up to 5 students with a similar knowledge base. I can tutor in person, over the phone and online. You will learn exactly what it is you need, at your pace, in any aspect of photography. The standard fee is $30/hr with some discounts available to small groups or purchasing 3 hour or longer sessions.

The inspiration for this is firstly, the deep happiness I get from knowing that each of my students is really learning and growing as a photographer. Secondly, the joy I feel as a teacher knowing that you are a satisfied, inspired, more confident photographer for life. Thirdly as a way to earn additional income for my family in a productive and enriching way.
