What is L’Artisan?

There is a word that is not used often enough in our culture: Artisan. What is an artisan? Someone who is skilled at creating something with their hands.

In an age where so much is produced on assembly lines and reproductions of masterpieces are created a dime a dozen, it is sometimes difficult for us to appreciate the talent and creativity that goes in to original artwork; whether it be a painting, a bridge, a novel, or even the plumbing that winds its way silently behind our walls.

Our country of Canada is rich with artisans; they are all around us. And yet often we never get to see the beauty they create privately, whether in their daily work or in their garages and basements at home. The industrial revolution brought many advances to our culture, but it also dealt a swift blow to the integrity and value of the skilled trades. Going into the skilled trades as a young person, or deciding to make your way as an artist, became viewed as a less desirable “life choice.” Thus, the term “starving artist” came into play.

We have made our living, from a young age, as artists. Whether it be designing homes and backyard oases or writing stories and music, it has been a battle to be sure. But one worth fighting.

We are passionate about joining together fellow artisans to form a community of people who can collectively celebrate the achievements of one another without the competition that so often accompanies a capitalistic society. A group of people who will boost each other up on our shoulders and shout, “Well done!” for all the world to hear.

It sounds grandiose to be sure, but it is the passion behind our little shop called L’Artisan in the Nautical Village at Frenchman’s Bay. We hope you will stop by and be struck with wonder and, perhaps, feel your own creative juices start to flow.
