Located in the beautiful Musquodoboit Valley, less than an hour’s drive from Halifax, the Natural Resources Education Centre (NREC) is dedicated to helping Nova Scotian children connect with, appreciate, and understand our place in nature.
We offer curriculum-based, hands-on, environmental educational programs for schools and groups at all age/grade levels with the goal of fostering a sense of stewardship and sustainable development of our natural resources.
The NREC facility has two classrooms, a boardroom, and a 120 acre (80 hectare) woodlot, with over 3 km of hiking trails. Our woodlot is an excellent spot for a hike, snowshoeing, cross country skiing or stopping for a quiet picnic at our look-off.
In February of 2015, the NREC received approval to design and create the provincial government’s first Nature Learning and Play Space.
Unlike playgrounds built out of plastic and metal, the Nature Learning and Play Space uses the area’s natural topography, trees, plants, water, rocks, clay and sand to create a space where kids can balance, climb, build, use their senses, learn about risk, and explore.
