In 2005, members of the community of Portage recognized that although the City of Portage la Prairie and RM of Portage la Prairie offer animal control services, there were no animal rescue organizations operating in the area.

Members of the community started the Portage Animal Welfare Society to improve the quality of life of stray and abandoned companion animals in the City and RM of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.

We operate exclusively through foster homes, and as such can only take in as many animals from the pound that we have a temporary home for.
