SaskSeats - Child Passenger Safety

Children.. They are the tiny little balls of joy to share so many memories with, and maybe even the reason for Baileys and coffee at 8am on Saturday. Keeping our children safe on the road can be a pretty daunting task in today’s world. Vehicle seat belts are not designed to fit children, which is why car seats and booster seats are required. But, there are so many seats to chose from, laws and regulations to abide by, strict manuals to follow - and sometimes the seat we think is "perfect" actually doesn't even fit/work in our vehicle. Just thinking about it can drive a new parent up the wall. But it's okay. We totally understand the struggle - we've been there too!

In the United States, The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) recorded 663 passenger occupant crash deaths for children under 13 in the 2015 year. We’ve come a long way since 1975 where the recorded crash death count was 1,384, but we haven’t come far enough. In fact, a recent check stop in Ontario with a focus on ensuring car seats were properly installed found that of the approximately 70 vehicles stopped, not one seat was installed or being used properly. Properly restrained children in properly installed child restraints save lives.

The goal is to be busy with personal child restraint checks, running installation clinics together, educating at parent groups, and providing the tools and resources for parents, caregivers, family, and all to be confident with the safety of their children in their vehicles.
