In 1985, Stony Plain and Shikaoi joined the Japanese Twinning Program. The program is a municipally-led, community-based initiative intended to provide Stony Plain and Shikaoi residents with the opportunity to experience international cultures.
The towns now support four exchange programs: the Student Delegation/ Host Family Program, the Adult Delegation, the Long-Stay Program, and the Assistant English Teaching (AET) Program. Each program provides the community with an opportunity to gain new knowledge, a deeper cultural understanding, and lifelong friends.
Shikaoi is a farming community for more than 6,000 residents. It is located forty minutes from Obihiro City on the central island of Hokkaido, Japan.
