More about SouthWest Edmonton Seniors Association

The Need:
Southwest Edmonton is a rapidly growing and culturally diverse area, home to more than 20,000 people over the age of 55. There are two major recreational facilities that include some senior’s fitness programs and a couple of well-loved neighbourhood seniors centres. What the Southwest does not have – is a gathering place and social programs that are available for all seniors, as is the case in most other parts of the city.

In the fall of 2013, SWESA contracted Banister Research to conduct a comprehensive Needs Assessment to explore the interests and needs of southwest Edmonton seniors for social and recreational programs and the most effective way for SWESA to meet those needs. The Needs Assessment was presented to SWESA members on April 2, 2014 at the AGM. There was strong community support and a defined need for a SouthWest Edmonton Seniors Activity Centre.

A Grassroots Movement:
Since it’s beginning in 2011, over 400 people have signed up to become SWESA members and attend events. The number of members grows exponentially as word spreads. If you are 55 years old or older, you are invited to become a member. If you are younger but keen to support the development of this senior’s resource, consider joining the volunteer team.

Improving Quality of Life:
SWESA wants to enhance the quality of life for seniors by providing programs and information
and by creating an environment where it is easy to meet and make friends. SWESA offers some of these services directly as well as works with other seniors’ and community organizations to offer programs in partnership. SWESA also provides information about other seniors programs being offered in SW Edmonton.

Seniors centres like SWESA play a vital role in the lives of seniors and are the focus of a major study underway at the University of Alberta.

A Gathering Place:
SWESA is asking seniors and the community at large what kind of environment will best support social interaction and social connections. SWESA is currently leasing space at the Yellowbird East Community Hall and makes use of some space at the Terwillegar Recreational Centre. At some point, SWESA will need more space and space that better supports program delivery. When a more permanent home is needed, SWESA will raise the funds, oversee the development and manage the financial and people assets of the organization.
