More about Spruce Grove & District Agricultural Society

The Spruce Grove & District Agricultural Society is a non-profit organization which was formed in 1972 to support agriculture, horticulture, home making, and quality of life in the community. The Ag Society's goal is to ensure that they keep the history of the community alive for both the present and future generations.

When the 1958 Grain Elevator was marked for demolition after the last manager left in 1995, the SG Ag Society stepped-in to preserve the Elevator as a working museum. Since then, several thousand visitors have toured the elevator and museum.

The Ag Society, a group of dedicated volunteer members, has been instrumental in contributing to the community, beginning with the construction of the Spruce Grove "Agrena" (now a hockey and curling rink) and hosting their annual AgraFair. This event grew to become Western Canada’s largest Agricultural Fair.

Since then, the Grain Elevator site has become a very busy venue with different old fashion carnivals and fairs, specifically tailored towards kids and families. Each year thousands of visitors from Canada and around the world visit the Grain Elevator Museum, Archives, and Farmers' Market. The SG Ag Society also hosts educational programs for schools, known as "Origins of our Community". The Agricultural Society also sponsors the Spruce Grove Archives, and sponsors two students to attend the annual ACCA educational Youth Program.

Several annual summer fund-raising events such as Flap Jacks at the Tracks, the Farm & Heritage Carnival, and the Harvest Fair, are hosted by the SG Agricultural Society and are popular among community members and visitors. Events hosted at the Elevator Museum site are for the purpose of raising funds to support ongoing maintenance of the Grain Elevator and restored Water Tower, education programs, and promotions for the Agricultural Society.

The Spruce Grove & District Agricultural Society's long-term goal is to build an Elevator Emporium - a building which will serve as a major tourist and heritage facility for the City of Spruce Grove. The building will be constructed on the elevator site and will resemble a period train station. It will house the Spruce Grove Archives, the Museum collection, Tea House, Gift Shop, and a conference room. This dynamic centre will serve visitors and tourists, but could also be used as a facility for community events and groups. Looking for a business partner to help make the train station vision a reality.
