The Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem is one of the world`s oldest charitable organizations with a colorful and proud history that spans nearly a thousand years, dating back to the Crusades (1080 AD) when Christian monks provided hospice care to knights and pilgrims.
Since that time, members of the Order devoted themselves to various charitable activities, including what has become the St. John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital Foundation (established in 1882), and two branches of the St. John Ambulance Foundation -- one focused on training the public in first aid (established in 1877), and the other, concerned with providing first aid care to the public (established 1887). It was this English body, engaged in very substantial charitable activities, which Queen Victoria recognized and incorporated in 1888 and became the modern Order of St.
John.
St. John Ambulance has been in Canada since 1883 and serving communities of the Niagara Region for the past 50 years.
Today, St. John Ambulance is a leader in educating the public about First Aid, CPR and use of Automated Defibrillators and community
programming that help support a healthy, safe Niagara where we live, work and play.
