What is Equine Assisted Learning?

Equine-Assisted Learning is a powerful, professional and effective approach, proven to have a positive impact on individuals of all ages.

How?

By including horses in specially-designed experiential learning exercises, equine-assisted specialists are able to observe non-verbal communication of the horses and be a translator as well as a guide to encourage the learner to attain the outcome of each exercise. This hands on approach to learning has proven to greatly multiply the participants retention and understanding of skills learned.

Children and adults both benefit from the program and for all educators, it should be mandatory.
~ Julie Thompson

Success Ranch programming will be in partnership with Cartier Farms; Equine Assisted Learning, Prince Albert SK.

Why Horses

Horses innately react to stimulus. They are kind and forgiving. They are sensitive and aware of their surroundings: feedback is honest and instant! In a horses world, boundaries are clear and easy to understand. A horse will look for strong leadership and respect fair consequences. Unlike Humans, Horses are unable to over think a situation. A horse will approach each interaction honestly, and are willing to follow once there is respect and trust.

They watch for the slightest movement and look for threatening body posture. Horses know how to discern the difference between a calm, non-threatening approach and anxious, nervous energy. However, every horse is different just as each person is unique.

Horses look for strong leadership and are willing to follow after they find respect and trust. If we provide contradictory behavior they start to question and challenge our authority to lead.
Horses cannot lie or over think a situation. They approach honestly to every interaction.
Horses react to stimulus and provide a skilled facilitator with an opportunity use the horse as a barometer.

Youth Program

Success Ranch's EAL Youth program consists of a curriculum that drives objectives to desired outcomes. Each exercise is experiential and designed in a Building Block style, focusing on one objective at a time. The focal point of the 12 week curriculum develops life skills.

Such Skills include:
Appropriate assertiveness
Building healthy relationships
Confidence & self esteem
Creativity & adaptability
Goal setting
Leadership & team building
Listening skills
Negotiation
Problem solving
Respect & trust
Responsibility
Self control
Verbal & non-verbal communication

Using the horses as a barometer, self examination and change occur.

Certified EAL facilitators observe the non-verbal communication of the horse and translate the behavior to guide the learner to the objective of the exercise.

Research supports this approach to learning. It greatly enhances the retention and understanding of skills learned and overflows to Activities of Daily Living (ADL).
