More about Unionville Home Society

Unionville Home Society is a charitable, non-profit organization, formed in 1967 by local citizens who wished to see more adequate and creative provision of care made for older persons in York Region.

Under the leadership of the Council of Churches of Unionville, many people from the communities of Markham, Unionville, Stouffville, Thornhill, Milliken and the surrounding countryside came together and chose to build a residential home for the elderly as the Society’s Centennial project.

In the fall of 1970, under the leadership of the Society’s first Chairman, Keith Kennedy, Union Villa was opened. It represented the first step in fulfilling the founders’ vision and was the result of widespread enthusiastic community support.

Unionville Home Society currently administers various programs on its nineteen acre campus including:

Union Villa
Accredited, licensed by the Ministry of Health, 160-bed long-term care home; 15 of the 160 beds are designated for our convalescent care program

The original Union Villa (1970) was demolished and rebuilt in 2005. It is a home where individual needs, interests and preferences direct our resident first philosophy for providing care and services.

Heritage Village
92 Rental bungalows for seniors aged 60 or older, 46 of which are rent geared to income.

Wyndham Gardens
122 Independent Living lease-for-life apartments for persons 55 years of age and older

Unionville Community Centre for Seniors
A multi-purpose centre serving the community

Community Support Services
Supportive Housing
A 24-hour, 7 day a week service for people who need help at home on campus in order to remain independent. It is a combination of outreach services, supportive housing and volunteer support.

Adult Day Program
This program offers a wide range of recreational and personal care supports in a safe and secure atmosphere to individuals in the community, as well as providing a break to caregivers. The program is available Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Transportation is not provided. Full and half days are available; meals and snacks are included in the fee.

Friendly Visiting
A supportive, volunteer program designed to maintain independent living on our campus.

UHS Foundation
The Unionville Home Society has a very committed and active Foundation that continues to support the needs of residents at Union Villa.

The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care provides long term care facilities like Union Villa with basic dollars that must be used for nursing care, food, programs and accommodations. All other amenities that enhance the environment for the residents must be provided by UHS which stretches the budget considerably.

The Foundation gratefully acknowledges all the donors who make financial contributions to UHS. These donations ensure that the care provided is above the norm – because the residents deserve the best.

UHS Membership
Membership in UHS represents a cross section of the community and is open to anyone who supports the purpose of the UHS. Members have voting privileges at the Annual General Meeting.
