More about Rooney & McCabe Irish Cobbler Potatoes

The Irish Cobbler potato is an early heirloom variety which is very popular for its distinctive taste and dry, creamy, white flesh that boils and bakes exceptionally well.
The origin is not known for certain; however, several claims suggest it was first grown by Irish shoemakers in the northeastern United States around 1876.
The Irish Cobbler was first introduced to Prince Edward Island in the 1920s.
Our roadside stand was opened in 1997 by the late Richard Rooney who operated the stand with the help of his wife, Anita, and her sons until his death in 2008. At present, they continue to grow those delicious Irish Cobblers and operate the self-serve stand with the help of the magical Leprechaun - Liam.
Liam appeared on the scene in 2000 and for the most part is well behaved (for a leprechaun) but does create some mischief now and then!! Liam takes the blame for machinery that just happens to break at the worst possible time, leaking hoses, flat tires, and the list goes on. But he takes it all in stride and never loses his cool.
So if you are in the Orwell area in late June or early July, drop by the self-serve stand and pick up a bag of Irish Cobbler potatoes. They will be available 24/7 until the end of harvest which is usually September depending on the growing season.
